It's January and I welcome you all officially to the Great Lock-in.
The season where most people are excited about making sure that the new year is their best year yet.
A lot of activities will be recommended, two of them are fasting and to disappear from social media.
I wonder who started the trend of fasting in January. It is understandable though. What better way to start the new year than to deny yourself of food and draw closer to God. This phenomenon, spearheaded by some churches, helps people to set the tone for the new year.
If you didn't eat to your fill during the festive season, I'm really sorry for you lol.
Then there's this random urge to disappear and "lock in" and return to the socials after some months as a completely different person.
Wiping away their online presence and coming back after some weeks with half your goals achieved (I'm kidding)
It doesn't help that our attention span has been ruined and social media has become an almost impossible to avoid avenue for some. Reclaiming your focus by cutting out social media looks like a step in the right direction.
I find it intriguing when people say, “you can never be sad in this country as long as you have data”. It paints the picture that for such a person, their happiness is subject to someone else's actions on the internet. Should there be an internet disruption, happiness becomes difficult to find. That is a sad way to live.
In a way these two actions described above are quite similar. Both are fasts of a certain kind, the former, traditional and the latter, modern.
One draws from supernatural help while the other draws from innate potential. Each one requires that you deliberately cut out something that is in one way or another important to you. Food is important to the person who fasts but they deny themselves anyway.
Anyone who fasts off social media is also humble enough to admit that this thing has in some ways become like food and there's the need to frequently check its usage.
The core of this is to actually refocus on what really matters; the Lord, your goals, your family, your time etc. To wake yourself up from the mirage of self-satisfaction to the reality of self-denial.
Joining the Great lock-in is less about the month of the year and more about your readiness. For those who are eyeing we,the "January batch", we know that you will join us soon, it's just a matter of time lol.
So whichever fast you are engaging in or will engage in, make sure you're not just ticking a box but resetting your lens to focus properly . I hope your lock-in yields positive results.
So are you camp fasting or camp avoid social media this January? Let me know in the comments.
